QB Club: Johansen, after bizarre loss at Bear River, begins WAC action

MODESTO -- The Johansen High Vikings thought they had won -- until they didn't.

Johansen watched in confusion, and perhaps anger, as Bear River's Luke Wall hit a 24-yard field goal as time expired to beat the Vikings 13-12 last week at Grass Valley.

It was a heartbreaking loss for Johansen (1-2).  Bear River, with the clock ticking inside 10 seconds and the home team out of timeouts, was penalized for having too many men on the field. Johansen head coach Rod Smith thought that should have ended the game, but -- after a series of meetings with the officials -- Bear River got one more snap and booted the game-winner.

"We talked to a lot of white hats (referees). Not a lot of clarity going on. Our guys should have won the game," Smith said Monday during the Modesto Quarterback Club's weekly lunch-meeting. "But there are no excuses. We shot ourselves in the foot in the second half."

Johansen led 12-3 going into the fourth quarter and limited Bear River to only 211 yards of offense. The Vikings' goal this week is to set aside the bizarre loss, because they open the Western Athletic Conference season at home Friday night against Beyer. The Patriots (1-2) were idle last week.
